Mission & History

Meet Anthony Tilghman

Father. Community Leader. Advocate for Prince George’s County.

Anthony Tilghman is a proud father, lifelong Prince George’s County resident, and current Commissioner for the City of District Heights. Born in Prince George’s County and raised in District Heights, Anthony is a product of Prince George’s County Public Schools and has dedicated his life to serving the community that helped shape him.

A former educator, award-winning photographer, children’s book author, nonprofit executive, and community advocate, Anthony has spent decades working to improve opportunities for children, families, seniors, and working residents throughout Prince George’s County. His commitment to service has been driven by a simple belief: real change happens when leaders listen, engage, and work alongside the people they serve.

As Executive Director of MakeSmartCool Inc., Anthony has developed and led youth literacy and enrichment programs that have impacted hundreds of children and families. Through partnerships with the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System, he created and expanded programs such as Kids Read and youth Chess Clubs, helping young people strengthen literacy, critical thinking, and leadership skills. His dedication to education has also included teaching digital media and mentoring youth throughout the county.

Leadership

Anthony currently serves as Chair of the Prince George’s County Public Schools Education Roundtable, where he has organized monthly Board of Education recap meetings to improve transparency and keep residents informed about decisions affecting students and families. He also leads annual youth trips to Annapolis, providing students with firsthand experiences in government and civic engagement while inspiring the next generation of leaders.

His commitment to public service extends across numerous boards, commissions, and community organizations. Anthony serves on the Prince George’s County Father’s, Men’s and Boys Commission, the District 8 Police Department Citizens Advisory Council, and chairs the Bylaws Committee for the Central Coalition of Prince George’s County Community Organizations. Through these roles, he has worked to strengthen relationships between residents, government agencies, schools, and public safety institutions.

Anthony is also the founder of the monthly Health and Wellness tour and has led community health initiatives that bring free screenings and health resources directly to residents across Prince George’s County. Through his Health and Wellness Tour, he continues to advocate for preventative care, health equity, and access to critical services for underserved communities.

An accomplished writer and communications professional, Anthony has authored opinion pieces and articles for media organizations across the country and maintains strong relationships with Black-owned newspapers nationwide. His experience in media, public engagement, and strategic communications has enabled him to amplify community voices and advocate for meaningful change on issues affecting Maryland families.

As the father of a daughter with autism, Anthony understands firsthand the challenges many families face when navigating educational systems, healthcare services, and support programs. This experience has strengthened his commitment to advocating for children with special needs and ensuring every child has access to the resources necessary to succeed.

Today, Anthony is running for the Maryland House of Delegates to bring responsive, accessible, and community-focused leadership to Annapolis. He believes government works best when elected officials remain connected to the people they represent, and he is committed to advancing policies that support strong schools, safe communities, economic opportunity, affordable housing, healthcare access, and government accountability.

Anthony Tilghman’s campaign is rooted in service, guided by integrity, and focused on building a stronger future for Prince George’s County and the State of Maryland.

I understand the challenges we are facing and I am ready to work on solutions for our state!

The Tilghman name has a long history in Maryland. From Tilghman Island in Talbot County to the historic Tilghman Sword displayed in the Maryland State House, the family’s legacy reflects generations of service to the state. Anthony draws inspiration from that tradition, embracing the qualities symbolized by a well-crafted sword: strength, resilience, integrity, adaptability, and a steadfast commitment to protecting and serving others.
